In the End, We'll All Become Stories

Cozy writer's library at evening: a glowing antique lantern beside a stack of leather-bound books, an open journal with a pen, a steaming camp mug, and a cat asleep on the desk, with pine trees and a twilight sky beyond the window.

“In the end, we'll all become stories.”

Margaret Atwood

There is something about those words that makes me pause.

We spend our lives gathering experiences. Some are extraordinary. Others seem so ordinary that we hardly notice them while they're happening.

A road traveled. A conversation remembered. A photograph taken at just the right moment. A mistake that becomes a family joke told for generations.

And somewhere along the way, those moments become stories.

Not necessarily the grand stories written in history books. Sometimes the ones that matter most are the small ones. The stories someone remembers because we were there, because we laughed together, because something we said or did stayed with them.

Perhaps that's what I love about storytelling. It gives an ordinary moment somewhere to live a little longer.

The House of Words is filled with those moments. Some funny, some thoughtful, some born on the back roads, and others from the quiet places we visit within ourselves.

Every drawer holds a story.

And every story was once somebody's life.
